Idaho Transportation Board commits new revenue to highways and bridges

The Idaho Transportation Board voted in Pocatello Thursday to advance critical projects to repair and maintain state highways and bridges using funds recently allocated by the Idaho Legislature.

The board selected 27 projects statewide to advance to fiscal year 2016 that will be funded by recent gasoline tax and registration fee increases passed by Idaho lawmakers.

"We are now accelerating critical projects more rapidly from the long list of needs,” said ITD Board Chairman Jerry Whitehead. “This is an important beginning to preserve our system by replacing and preserving our bridges, as well as our pavements, and keeping Idaho's economy and citizens moving."

The 27 selected projects total $46.8 million that break out as follows:

Bridge restoration - $2.8 million
Bridge preservation - $13.8 million
Pavement restoration - $21.1 million
Pavement preservation - $9.1 million

Project selection was based on the criteria of project readiness, bridge restoration or preservation, and pavement rehabilitation or preservation. The projects were accelerated from those listed in future years of ITD’s five-year Idaho Transportation Investment Program (ITIP), available at itd.idaho.gov.

"We commend ITD engineers and staff for the quick response on making these projects ready for construction,” said ITD Director Brian Ness. “Organizational changes have made possible the advancement of these critical projects."
