D1’s Standish thanked for I-90 tire change

Dick Standish (pictured right), a maintenance worker on the Coeur d’Alene South and East crew, changed a flat tire for Arielle Horan on a busy stretch of eastbound Interstate 90 in the early afternoon of June 12. Although Standish called it an everyday occurrence to help people on the road, and just part of his job, Horan respectfully disagreed.

Horan sent an email to ITD later that afternoon giving specific details about the location and circumstance, and saying “I wanted to submit a very heartfelt thank you to the gentleman who helped me today. He was extremely kind and understanding and helped me get back on the road when my insurance company's roadside assistance was being less than helpful.”

“I was intimidated by the traffic as well as the prospect of changing my flat — the driver's side tire — on a hill next to traffic. I frequently drive this stretch between CDA and Kellogg, and am so grateful for the assistance provided by ITD.”

“I am genuinely humbled by this kindness and am very, VERY thankful for the rescue!” Horan added.

“Dick has a great work ethic and concern for the safety of his customers,” said his direct supervisor, crew foreman Dave Palmer.

“I can always count on Dick to make the good decisions and do the right thing while working on the roadway.”

"Dick has been helping others on the road for years now, he exemplifies what great customer service stands for, and we are very proud to have him as part of our District 1 team," said District Administrative Services Manager Scotty Fellom.
