D6’s Maupin wins ITD statewide equipment roadeo

Trent Maupin, Sugar City maintenance, won the statewide equipment roadeo June 9 in Pocatello, qualifying to compete in the Western Regional Snow and Ice Conference in Colorado this fall.

Maupin won the D6 roadeo a week before the statewide event. District 5’s Matt Beckstead, last year’s statewide champion, took second place in the statewide event this year, while D3’s Kelley Dick finished in third place. As the top two finishers in the statewide event, Maupin and Beckstead will represent ITD in Colorado in late September.

“Things went my way,” Maupin said. The win was especially gratifying because six of the 24 contestants were past state champions, he explained.

Maupin won third place at the state meet last year, his best showing in six tries. He has won the District 6 roadeo five times, including his first year at ITD.

The squad from District 5 repeated as the team winner. Dan Daniels of the Malad maintenance shed, won the D5 roadeo after placing second in the statewide roadeo last year.
