From the ITD Vault: Gas Prices 40 years ago

Gas prices in 1975 reached an average of 53 cents per gallon — an unacceptable spike from 39 cents per gallon the year before. Today, those spikes are an everyday occurrence, but they were cause for major concern 40 years ago.

By the way, did you know in 1973 the Department of Energy mandated gas prices be shown on the side of fuel pumps? Prior to that, consumers just had to trust that the price they were charged was correct.
