"Support" was focus of November Constructive Culture Workshop

ITD's Training and Development Center was in disarray, with Popsicle sticks, paper clippings and masking tape littering tables. For Sandy Harris, workshop facilitator, the mess was proof of another successful Constructive Culture Workshop, held Nov. 16.

Harris is just one member of the department's Constructive Culture Committee, an employee-initiated group volunteering time, energy and creative ideas to promote the department's changing culture. The group's activities include monthly workshops that focus on key elements of the department's constructive culture definition.

The November workshop focused on "Support" in the workplace and was facilitated by Harris and Dennis Jensen. ITD employees were invited to participate in hands-on activities and group discussions about the month's theme.

"Participants created model 'sign bridges' using the craft supplies to build a prototype sign that allowed a toy truck to pass underneath," said Harris. "Each group then presented their unique design to the other participants and described how the success of the project was supported individually and collectively."

Through this collaborative workshop, department employees were able to learn from one another about the concept of support and how it can be applied at all levels throughout ITD, she explained.

This was the fourth class in the Constructive Culture Workshop Series. It will be followed by a two-part workshop on "Teamwork," set for Jan. 6 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with part two on Jan. 20 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Both workshops will be held at Headquarters in Boise. Planning for a February workshop on "Accountability" is underway.
