Improvements to eastern Idaho's Dingle Pond enter final phase

The Idaho Transportation Department is completing the final phase of work at a former gravel quarry called Dingle Pond, which lies adjacent to the Bear River east of Dingle in Bear Lake County. The yellow flags in the picture above denote new plantings. Pond access is also limited to non-vehicular traffic only.

Work at the pond is designed to restore wildlife habitat, protect water quality and provide better management of the pond, which was used by the transportation department as a source for gravel.

Improvements being made to the area by the transportation department will offset environmental impacts made to other areas as a result of highway construction projects.

The project has involved modifying access at Dingle Pond. Attemps have been made to reopen a road that was closed. The transportation department is asking visitors and recreationists to refrain from reopening roads that were closed. Access to the site may have to be restricted if efforts continue to reopen closed roads.

The work is enhancing the site's value as wildlife habitat, as well as improving fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities. Improvements include the creation of additional open water, the acquisition of additional riverfront access, providing walking trails and a fishing bridge. Future improvements will include a handicapped-accessible dock provided by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Since the 1990s, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has stocked the pond with fish.
