ITD Public Transportation office collaborates with Idaho State Police
on vehicle inspections

ITD's Public Transportation office has a statewide inventory of 600 vehicles, and holds the title to 144 of those. Recognizing a need to monitor the useful life of vehicles and assess the need for replacement, the office is collaborating with the Idaho State Police on a new and innovative vehicle-safety program.

In 2015, ISP's Commercial Vehicle Safety Division inspected 76 public transportation vehicles. So far this year, they have conducted an additional 40 inspections. The information collected includes vehicle mileage, capacity, vehicle age and condition.

"The innovative component is our partnership with ISP on the inspections," explained Shauna Miller, a grants officer in charge of Public Transportation's safety program. "They really are the experts in that area and they are doing it for us at no cost."

In addition, the PT unit is utilizing a new tool used to review and assess compliance with federal and state laws, requirements and regulations. ITD-PT conducted 15 site reviews last year, assessing program management, civil rights, financial management and asset management. There are 11 more reviews planned this year, with 21 more coming in 2017.
