Barrus fills slot as state design/traffic engineer in Sablan’s absence

Jesse Barrus will arrive in Boise April 4 to fill the vacancy left by the departure of Kevin Sablan, ITD’s state Design/Traffic Engineer, to Washington, D.C. for a one-year AASHTO fellowship. Barrus earned the position from a statewide candidate pool in a competitive process.

Sablan started his year in the nation’s capital March 28.

Barrus, the Materials Engineer from District 5, was also recently named one of only two ITD recipients to gain entry in the WASHTO Emerging Leaders program.

“Jesse is a future-oriented leader concerned with quantifiable results, which he consistently delivers,” explained ITD southeastern Idaho District Engineer Ed Bala. “Equally important, he’s concerned with developing engineering and leader skills for his staff and himself. Jesse embodies ITD’s culture shift and is the kind of leader we need to succeed.”

Barrus began with ITD in as a staff engineer in District 5’s Design section five years ago, and was promoted to materials engineer in April 2014. He was the project manager for the Chubbuck Diverging Diamond Interchange, an award-winning interchange design that was the first of its kind in Idaho. In addition, Jesse developed Idaho’s first-ever warranty paving project and serves as the District 5 innovation steward.
