ITD wins trio of American motor vehicle association awards

The Idaho Transportation Department won three awards May 12 from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), including two for efforts designed to increase public awareness of critical highway-safety initiatives.

The three regional awards will be presented today in Portland, Oregon, at the 2016 AAMVA conference.

The three awards are:

AAMVA - "Idaho Online Driver Record Dashboard" in the Innovative Use of Technology category. This is both a regional and an international award winner.

ITD was the first in the nation to unveil this new innovative online tool for businesses to constantly track the driver's license status of employees. The innovation could also keep dangerous drivers off the road and improve public safety.

The Driver Record Dashboard allows companies to build and manage an unlimited list of drivers by entering vital information such as the driver's name, license number or birthdate, in one online location.

The dashboard combines two distinct tools (driver's license record status and medical certification status) into one convenient, web-based application. ITD partnered with Access Idaho to build and maintain the subscription-based service, in which no tax dollars or state funds were used.

AAMVA PACE (Public Affairs and Consumer Education) – for "Gramma's House or the Big House" in the Digital Graphics category.

An impaired-driving campaign based on the theme "Impaired driving wrecks the holiday" spurred a visual providing a clear choice of two very different destinations for holiday dinner. The digital graphic put focus on making the decision to drive impaired or not, and the consequences of that decision - Gramma's House or the Big House.

AAMVA PACE - for "Drive Safe, Belts On" video in the Internally produced PSA or TV commercial category.

Watch Video

Shot and edited entirely in-house in fall 2015, ITD produced a spot aimed at a younger audience and youthful drivers to address the issue of seat belt use.

The video was shot at the College of Idaho in Caldwell with volunteer talent from one of the school's residence halls, specifically targeting youthful drivers and the decision to buckle up before the car starts. This was a strategic decision, as statistics show that if seat belt use becomes a habit at a young age, it will likely carry through for an entire lifetime.

"Using a seat belt is a tremendously effective way to prevent fatalities and serious injuries," ITD Office of Highway Safety Manager John Tomlinson said. "Hundreds of Idaho lives would have been saved by the use of seat belts in just the past few years."

In addition to video, the campaign also involved radio ads, web ads, mobile phone ads and placements aimed at social-media platforms.

ITD also won three AAMVA awards last year.
