Bringing traffic-control training in-house saves ITD money,
provides greater flexibility

For years, ITD has been using Evergreen Safety Council (ESC) for training of Traffic Control Supervisors, at a cost of approximately $6,400 per class. That cost, for up to 20 students, did not fluctuate — it was no cheaper if there were fewer attendees or even no-shows for the course.

ITD also had to schedule the courses around the availability of the ESC instructor, making it  difficult to provide just-in-time training or training as needed.

Starting last week, ITD is moving the training in-house to swing that pendulum in their favor.

ESC has certified 10 in-house instructors for ITD, and will provide all materials, and updates, for approximately $80 to $120 per student.

For all maintenance and construction employees to attend the old training would have cost approximately $250,000. The new system will cost approximately $100,000 for the same number of attendees and will allow ITD to provide the training as needed.

Obtaining ESC certification for five in-house instructors is a one-time initial cost to ITD of $3,150, (plus $250 for each additional trainer) but will allow the department to deliver training at a much lower cost and add flexibility to scheduling.
