TWIN FALLS - Initial work for the installation of a storm water sewer system beneath Blue Lakes Boulevard will mean the closure of the Twin Falls Chamber of Commerce visitor center near the Snake River Canyon rim beginning as soon as Monday, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
The project contractor will do minor drilling in the parking area of the visitor center. Traffic control signs will be placed at the entrance of the parking lot and along walkways to prevent pedestrian and vehicle travel in the area.
The drilling is being done to find rock placement and densities along the storm water system alignment in preparation for the beginning of construction on March 9.
Installation of a new storm water sewer system will begin at the Snake River Canyon rim and move south into Blue Lakes Boulevard near Fillmore Street and work toward Pole Line Road. Traffic impacts in the southbound and middle turn lanes are expected between the canyon rim and Pole Line Road through the end of March.
Later phases of construction will include reconstruction of the road between Falls Avenue and Pole Line Road. That work is expected to begin in May.
Western Construction, of Boise, is the contractor for the $4.6 million reconstruction. Work will include the storm water sewer system, replacement or service to utilities buried under the road as well as a new base and road surface.
ITD and the Idaho State Police caution motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
