The Central Laboratory provides testing services for all the districts during preliminary design, construction and maintenance. The materials that are tested here include but not limited to asphalt, aggregate, soil, geo-textile, cement, concrete, fly-ash, paint, deicer, and reinforcement bar. The Central Laboratory is AASHTO accredited and often used as third party dispute resolution laboratory. This unit is responsible for maintaining the nuclear gauges around the State and has a trained employee working as the Nuclear Radiation Safety Officer. This unit is also responsible for establishing the procedures and tests required to control the quality of materials used in highways. The Central Laboratory is involved in maintaining quality assurance through the selection of tests, providing the expertise to support those tests, establishing testing frequency, calibration of test equipment and monitoring practices used for independently checking testing procedures. This unit also provides consultative services for the department in the areas of design, construction and maintenance.
