Commercial carrier seminars planned statewide

Changing national security has ushered in an era of new state and federal regulations that affect commercial truck drivers and operators of trucking companies in Idaho.

The Idaho Transportation Department’s Motor Carrier Services office will conduct a series of seminars entitled "A Whole New World of Service" throughout the state this fall to explain regulations that affect commercial truck drivers and operators of trucking companies.

Changes in national security following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. prompted new regulations for hazardous materials carriers. As required by the USA PATRIOT Act, Idaho passed new legislation that requires background checks for anyone who renews, transfers, or is issued a new Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a hazardous materials endorsement after Jan. 31, 2005.

Those changes are among the topics to be covered in the workshop series scheduled for the following locations and dates:

Twin Falls College of Southern Idaho, 315 Falls Avenue, Twin Falls. Two sessions will be offered, at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., in room 277 of the Taylor Building

Sandpoint Northern Lights Building, Community Hall, five miles south of the Long Bridge on U.S. 95. The session begins at 1:30 p.m.

Coeur d’Alene ITD’s District 1 office, 600 W. Prairie. Two sessions will be offered, at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., in the EOC conference room
Thursday
Oct. 21
Lewiston ITD’s District 2 office, 2600 Frontage Road. Two sessions will be offered, at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., in the large conference room

Copies of the 2004-2005 Trucker’s Guide, published by the DMV’s One-Stop Shop, will be available free at the seminars.

A number of other organizations will present information at the seminar, including ITD’s Driver Services and Ports of Entry/Permits, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Idaho State Police and the Idaho Tax Commission.

The seminars are appropriate for all trucking company owners and staff, trucking company accountants and bookkeepers, haul-for-hire, private or farm haulers, reporting services and owner/operators.

Among the topics to be covered are:

  • Hours of Service rules
  • Cargo inspection and tie-down rules
  • Vehicle safety inspections
  • Federal Department of Transportation MC and DOT numbers
  • Avoiding costly mistakes
  • Online services for the International Registration Plan (IRP), Full Fee registration renewal, the International
    Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), and other permits and endorsements
  • E-mail service for information, forms and changes to vehicle records, and
  • Background checks for hazardous materials carriers

There is no cost for the seminar, but individuals planning to participate are asked to complete a registration form and mail it to the One-Stop Shop, P.O. Box 7129, Boise, Idaho 83707.
