Motorcyclists to assemble for ride to work

Visibility, which often is a concern of motorcycle riders, should not be a problem Wednesday (July 20) at ITD’s Headquarters in Boise. Even if ridership doesn’t increase significantly on that day (although it probably will), motorized two-wheelers will assume a place of prominence in the parking lot between the main building and the East Annex.

Riders will consolidate their presence as part of the annual Ride to Work Day, a nationwide event designed to increase awareness of the benefits of riding motorcycles to work. Vince Main, a long-time rider, expects to build on the 15-16 riders who joined the campaign last year.

The first organized effort in 2003 drew 23 riders. The event, held nationally on the third Wednesday in July, is influenced by summer vacations, Main said. A variety of motorcycles, from 110 cc trail bikes to dual-purpose machines and road bikes are expected for the event in Boise. Major motorcycle manufactures like Harley Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and perhaps some English models may participate.

ITD riders are encouraged to use their motorcycles to reach district offices and other work places.

Main said the benefits of riding motorcycles to work often are overlooked – literally and figuratively – by other motorists. Motorcycles:

  • Consume less fuel
  • Require less space for parking
  • Take up less space on highways
  • Have less impact than cars on roadway surfaces, and
  • Often provide faster commutes

Higher-end vehicles command prices of $15,000-25,000, Main said. Japanese models can cost up to $15,000. Much easier on the bank account are motor scooters that are popular in Europe and are gaining increasing favor in the U.S. because of economics.
