ITD softball team advances to tournament championship;
grandslam proves to be decisive blow

Saturday proved to be a good day for Road Warriors, but an even better one for a band of delinquents.

One of ITD’s two teams competing in the 2008 Fall State Employees Softball Tournament advanced to the championship game where they lost to the “Delinquents” from Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections.

The team from juvenile corrections needed some late-game heroics to pull out the win. Entering the top of the seventh innings, the two teams played to an 8-8 deadlock. Roger Everson cast the tie-breaking swing, a grand slam that put the game out of reach.

Even Idaho’s governor provided some heroics, driving in the winning run for the governor’s office team in its final game.

“All of the teams in the tournament played great and had a great time,” said ITD’s Ruth Martin. “I want to thank each of you for making this another great tournament.”

ITD’s runner-up Road Warriors defeated the number 2 team from the Idaho Department of Corrections and followed with wins over Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the Idaho Industrial Commission to advance to the championship game.

Road Rage, ITD’s second team, lost its opener to the number 2 team from Fish and Game, then split two games in the consolation bracket. ITD beat a combined Division of Building Services/Idaho Department of Lands team and lost to the Idaho Tax Commission.

Although a few ITD players emerged from the tournament with a few minor aches and pains, Mel Smith of the Road Rage sustained the worst injury.  He ruptured his Achilles Tendon and was scheduled for surgery Thursday (Oct. 2). He may be in a cast 2-3 weeks and reportedly could require 6-8 months for recovery, perhaps in time for next year’s softball tournament.
