Safety presentation submitted for national award

Work zone safety is a core value for ITD and its Connecting Idaho Partners. Safety in roadway work zones also is the subject of a recent multimedia presentation prepared by CIP for use in drivers’ education programs statewide.

The presentation recently was submitted as a state/regional “Outreach Campaign” to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s 2009 Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Awards competition. Winners will be announced in the next few weeks.

The “Driving Safely in Work Zones” presentation is aimed at new drivers and provides practical advice on recognizing work zone hazards and methods for navigating roadway work zones to avoid accidents.

The interactive presentation allows a driving instructor to walk students through a roadway work zone, identify parts of the zone, point out work zone signs and traffic delineators, and identify potential hazards.

CIP team members conducted presentation/training sessions at drivers’ education workshops throughout Idaho. At each workshop, team members presented the training program and provided a copy of the presentation at no charge to instructors for use in their classrooms.

Previously, drivers’ education instructors lacked teaching materials related to safety in work zones.

The CIP team trained 259 instructors during nine presentations in seven Idaho locations. It is estimated that these instructors will teach the new material to more than 100,000 students in the coming year.
