Department of Homeland Security approves extension
The federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) this week approved ITD’s extension request for compliance to the REAL-ID Act. Alan Frew, administrator of the Division of Motor Vehicles, sent the formal request Friday (Jan. 11), the same day DHS issued a 284-page document that outlines federal requirements for implementing drivers’ license security measures.

Winter driving
511 system helps motorists navigate highways
Idaho’s 511 Traveler Services system helps motorists make safe, informed travel decisions. Demand for information about highway and weather conditions – both from the interactive Web site (511.idaho.gov) that features a new high bandwidth option and the telephone system – have increased dramatically since the season’s first major snowstorm. And it is putting increased pressure on maintenance personnel to keep information current.

Safe Routes to School

Training helps organizations prepare for grant process
City officials, public works directors, school superintendents and city council members from 21 Idaho communities hoped to improve their chances at receiving a 2008 Safe Routes to School award by attending a Jan. 11 training session hosted by the Idaho Transportation Department. The Safe Routes to School program provides local schools and cities funding for projects designed to increase the number of children walking or biking to school.

ITD receives award for supporting Reservists, training
Julian Clark, an aviation helicopter mechanic, saw an ITD booth and decided to check out the agency’s employment opportunities. He was hired on the spot to join District 3’s drill crew in the materials section. A couple of months into his new job, Clark needed to leave for a two-month National Guard training session.

ITD, fire marshal working on responses to highway car fires
An average of six vehicle fires occur each year outside the jurisdiction of an organized fire department and can continue to burn uncontrolled for hours until they finally burn themselves out. Those incidents are time consuming, resource demanding, infrastructure damaging, route restricting and frustrating to the victims.

AMBER Alerts are an early notification system that includes law enforcement, the broadcast community, various state and public agencies as well as you. When seconds count, America's children can rely on the AMBER Alert; and you! Nationally, there have 370 children reunited with their families due to Alerts.

Chaney becomes first ITD graduate of Certified Public Manager program
A graduation ceremony in December formally concluded nearly four years of specialized training for Martin Chaney, making him the first – and thus far – only ITD employee to become a Certified Public Manager. Chaney was taking optional classes in management from Boise State University when he learned that Idaho ITD would begin offering the CPM program for state employees

Program is a 'win-win' proposition for employees, agency
Supervisors and managers in public agencies are eligible to apply for entry into Idaho’s Certified Public Manager program. It consists of five levels of training totaling 300 hours to be completed over three years. Participation increases advancement opportunities by giving a valuable skill base that can be transferred to any public agency.
