Board to discuss inflation impact on programs
The Idaho Transportation Board will address a trio of subjects during a Tuesday workshop as a prelude to its monthly business meeting at Headquarters in Boise. The workshop agenda includes discussions of the GARVEE program, the FY08-12 Highway Capital Improvement Program and the Safety Rest Area Program.

New board member brings engineering expertise

Despite the volumes of information Jim Coleman has received the past two weeks, his transition to the Idaho Transportation Board should be relatively swift. Coleman, who brings more than 30 years of engineering experience to the board, was appointed Jan. 31 to fill the District 1 vacancy left by the retirement of John McHugh. The new member will join the board Tuesday and Wednesday when it meets in Boise.

Mary Hunter explains Empty Shoes journey
The Empty Shoes Events were held statewide the week of Jan. 22, in an effort to bring visibility to the need to get all Idahoans to buckle up. Many of the speakers made it evident that Idaho deserves an effective seat belt law, and that we can’t sustain our current 80 percent seat belt use rate due to Idaho’s inability to qualify for funding to sustain our seat belt education and enforcement programs.

Vehicle/highway technology to take center stage

Who could have imagined? Photos without film. Pocket telephones. Geographic locations by satellite. And cars that communicate with each other. Is it possible that specially equipped vehicles will warn of an impending collision? Or communicate weather and road conditions to drivers in other cars?

AAA study finds link between teen driving limits, safety
Sixteen-year-old drivers are involved in 38 percent fewer fatal crashes and 40 percent fewer crashes resulting in injuries in states with graduated driver licensing (GDL) programs that have at least five of seven common components, according to a release to be issued this week by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Size-appropriate child seats required
Nationwide, at least 80 percent of children ages 4 to 7 are not properly secured in safety seats when traveling in a motor vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Idaho law requires that all children younger than 7 be properly secured in an appropriate child safety restraint in a vehicle. Violations of the state’s child safety seat laws carry a $60 fine.

Student receives award for calendar drawing
Conor Souhrada received a recognition award from Officer Kyle Wills with the Boise Police Department at a short ceremony held recently at ITD Headquarters.
The sixth grader from Eagle Middle School in Eagle, is one of 15 young artists from throughout the state who had artwork selected for publication in the 2007 Highway Safety Kids Calendar. The calendar is produced annually by ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety.
