ITD's retired Jim Pline knows how to escape
When television production company 44 Blue wanted to find an expert in the design of safe emergency escape ramps producers went to the Institute of Transportation Engineers, which in turn summoned retired ITD engineer Jim Pline. No one better to explain how to design and build escape ramps than Pline, who left the department in 1987 after serving 35 years in a variety of roles.

Reese shares honor for project that enhances fish migration
Lotwick Reese was in high school when he noticed construction crews building U.S. 89 in front of the family farm near Bloomington in the Bear Lake Valley. He was so intrigued by the work that he asked about a job with the Idaho Department of Highways. A half-century later, with retirement qualifications met – and surpassed – Reese has been honored for one of his greatest professional accomplishments.

Vehicle technology demonstrated amid snowstorm
Had there been more traffic on the test driving track Thursday, a demonstration of new vehicle technology could have shown collision avoidance capabilities in winter driving conditions. Instead, the demonstration showed how new technology can warn drivers when they enter a highway construction zone and when a traffic signal is about to turn red. ITD, with cooperation from the state police, brought the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) America demonstration to Idaho.

Daylight Saving will come early... are you ready?
When Day Light Saving Time begins on March 11 – three weeks earlier than usual – some computers may need a little extra help figuring out the right day and time. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended Day Light Saving Time (DST) by four weeks this year – beginning on the second Sunday in March and ending on the first Sunday in November.

Change your clocks, including those on computers, March 11
The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a reminder this week that Daylight Saving Time will begin at 2a.m. on Sunday, March 11, three weeks earlier than in recent years. Prior to this year, Daylight Saving Time has been observed from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October.

Two reports added to ITD Web site

Two recent ITD publications have been added to the department’s Web site in portable document form (PDF) and are available for downloading or printing. ITD’s 36-page Annual Report and a technical report that reviews the first three years of a 10-year pilot project. Both are available on the Web under News & Info.
