budget gains JFAC approval with one change
The
Joint Appropriations and Finance Committee Monday
approved ITD’s $496 million budget for fiscal
year 2008 with one notable adjustment. The Legislature’s
budget-setting committee reduced ITD’s capital
equipment request by $3.5 million. That amount
will be added, at the transportation board’s
direction, to the Statewide Transportation Investment
Program and used on Idaho’s highways.

JFAC approves '08 bonding authority for GARVEE
The
Joint Appropriations and Finance Committee Wednesday
authorized ITD and its bonding agent to issue $246
million in GARVEE bonds to fund transportation projects
in six corridors during fiscal year 2008.Following
nearly an hour of discussion, members settled on
the middle of three similar proposals.

Board
to consider several annual program reports
The Idaho Transportation Board will spend much of
next Wednesday (March 21) looking back when staff
members from three offices present annual reports
on their 2006 activities. Conforming to ITD policy,
representatives of the Risk Management Office, Internal
Review and Human Resource Services will provide
reports. The one-day meeting will begin at 8 a.m.
in the Headquarters auditorium.

Idaho
among top 10 in nation for highway efficiency
Idaho’s transportation system ranks among
the top 10 in the nation for efficient use of resources
and the condition of its highways, according to
an independent analysis released recently. The report
ranks Idaho’s highway system at No. 8, an
improvement of three places from the previous year.
North Dakota continues to lead the nation, followed
by South Carolina, Kansas, New Mexico, Oregon, Georgia
and Kentucky.

Extra care urged in preparing timesheets
Some ITD employees have been shocked to receive
their paycheck and discover it is only half the
amount they expected. They are equally surprised
to learn they have 40 hours or more of unexpected
compensatory time. The culprit? Failure to advance
to the second week of the two-week time period and
enter hours worked under the second week.

employees to receive service awards Wednesday
Although
employment longevity typically is measured in years,
for many in the transportation department it also
is measured in contributions to Idaho travelers
and improvements to the system they depend on. More
than 50 ITD employees, including a dozen who concluded
their service through retirement in the last six
months of 2006, will be honored for their contributions
Wednesday at a semi-annual service awards ceremony.

'Buzzed'
driving still is drunk driving
As St. Patrick's Day approaches March 17, the
transportation department reminds motorists that
"buzzed" driving is considered drunk
driving, and law enforcement agencies throughout
Idaho will be out in full force to catch and arrest
impaired drivers.In 2005, 36 percent of all traffic
fatalities in Idaho were a result of impaired
driving.
