Department announces top maintenance, safety employees

David Jensen
Maintenance Person of Year

Dennis Jensen, who began as an hourly employee 22 years ago with ITD, was honored recently as the department’s Maintenance Person of the Year for 2004. A native of Shoshone, Jensen is the District 4 maintenance foreman.

Gary Atchley
Safety Person of Year

A veteran of nearly 28 years with the department, District 2’s Gary Atchley was honored recently as ITD’s Safety Person of the Year for 2004. Atchley’s selection was based, in part, on his many contributions to the District 2 safety committee.

ITD bids farewell to victims of March 15 crash
Colleagues and friends joined family members in honoring two Idaho Transportation Department workers who were killed in a two-vehicle accident March 15. Memorial services for Toby Stevens and James Onthank were held Saturday (March 19) and Monday (March 21) respectively in Grangeville.

Turner honored for innovation, imagination
Dave Turner comes from a long line of craftsmen – it’s in his blood, in his heart and in his hands. The ability to observe something as it is and envision what it could become extends back as his great-grandfather who carved peach pits into animal forms. The award for innovation officially was based on a machine he crafted for colleagues in the chemical lab.

Board learns of plans for 2005 internal review
Internal Review will focus on governance and quality assurance activities when it conducts its review this year, explained Internal Review Manager Carri Rosti. She told the transportation board last week the review will assist management, the board, and other stakeholders in helping to ensure that ITD activities are based on reliable governance and efficient systems and processes.

Three Island seniors have new way to travel

After more than two years, the Three Island Senior Citizens Center has finally taken possession of a new passenger van. Billie Dillon, site coordinator and business manager for the Glenns Ferry senior citizens organization said the grant process to acquire the van began in January 2003.

Booster seat bill awaits governor's signature
A bill that would extend the time period that children will be required to remain in child seats while traveling in Idaho awaits the governor’s signature next week, the last step in the process to become law. House Bill 178 requires that children continue to use car safety seats until six years of age, rather than the present law that sets the age limit at 4. Weight restrictions are removed under the pending bill.
