Boise's KTVB carries extensive interview
Idaho Transportation Department Director Brian W. Ness outlined his vision for the agency in an interview with Boise television station KTVB. The story ran Wednesday, May 12, on the 10 p.m. newscast and again on May 13 during the station’s morning show.

KTVB captures vision of new director

A new man is now the driving force at the Idaho Transportation Department. Brian Ness took over as director in January. After 30 years with the Michigan Department of Transportation, Brian Ness decided it was time to take on a new challenge. Ness walked in on his first day thinking he'd have time to settle into the new job.

Request expected for summer institute funds
The Idaho Transportation Board will consider a request next week to support the National Summer Transportation Institute in its fiscal year 2010 Capital Investment Program. The board continues its summer road schedule conducting its regular business meeting in Pocatello Wednesday at the District 5 office followed by a tour of area projects on Thursday.

Highway safety
Summit provides crash course on saving lives
A strong highway safety effort not only saves lives but also can lead to lower health-care costs and reduced crime said speakers at the 2010 Highway Safety Summit, sponsored recently by ITD’s Office of Highway Operations and Safety in Boise. More than 265 law enforcement officers, medical personnel and highway safety professionals heard a sobering presentation of the physics and physical consequences of high-speed crashes by keynote speaker Pam Holt.

Aeronautics
Safe Pilot educational seminars scheduled

The summer flying season kicks off with three Safe Pilot Program seminars planned for Coeur d’Alene, Nampa and Idaho Falls this month. ITD’s Division of Aeronautics is organizing the meetings, dubbed “We’re Seein’ Spots...!!,” as part of its nine-month safety program on aerial searches for missing and overdue aircraft.

Maintenance worker helps stranded motorists

Two motorists en route to a cancer treatment in Lewiston recently found themselves in the wrong place at the right time. District 2 maintenance worker Ty Winther was in the same place at the right time.

Winther was driving on an isolated stretch of Idaho 8 transporting limbs trimmed from a highway roadside thinning project when he noticed two women who appeared to be having car troubles. He stopped to provide assistance, and as it turns out, preserved an important medical appointment

Ceremony officially opens Thousand Springs kiosk
U.S. 30 was once the only way to travel from one end of the Magic Valley to the other as it wound through farms and little communities following the old Oregon Trail south of the Snake River canyon. Then came the interstate and the draw of higher-speed travel.

Idaho 21 avalanche closures sets record low
For the second straight winter, a new standard has been set for keeping the state’s notorious "Avalanche Alley" section of Idaho 21 between the Grandjean Junction turnoff and Banner Summit open during the avalanche season.

I-84/Vista Interchange receives engineering award
The accolades keep mounting for the reconstruction project at the I-84, Vista Interchange in Boise. The American Society of Civil Engineers (Southern Idaho Chapter) awarded Stanley Consultants, the group that designed Vista, with the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award April 27. It was the fourth award for the project.

New message signs to be activated
Crews will activate two large highway reader boards in eastern Idaho - near Pocatello and the Bingham-Bonneville County Line - late this month. The two large electronic message boards are near Applebee's restaurant on northbound Interstate 15 in Pocatello and half-a-mile north of the Bingham-Bonneville county line on northbound I-15 in Bonneville County.

ITD, Commerce officials tour Idaho's seaport
When most people think of the Port of Lewiston, images of grain-laden barges and tug-boats come to mind.
But with a downturn in shipping, the port is working with businesses that aren’t normally associated with a waterfront. During a recent tour of the port by staff with ITD and the Department of Commerce, the port’s general manager discussed strategies to increase revenue.

Public input helps guide ITD decisions
Input is being gathered at statewide meetings on how the transportation department can best help the state’s economy reach $60 billion in goods and services, while improving safety and mobility on Idaho highways. Meetings were held in April in Pocatello, Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, Twin Falls and Idaho Falls with legislators, chambers of commerce, economic development associations, city planners and engineers, among others.

ITD supply, operations supervisor helps to preserve depot

For a dozen years now, Jim West, Supply Operations Supervisor in District 1, has spent much of his free time moonlighting in District 2.  Not working for ITD, but for his 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Potlatch. West began the Washington, Idaho & Montana Railway History Preservation Group (HPG, for short) in 1998.
