First Lady formally kicks off Safe Routes to Schools
As the school year winds down and children focus on summer vacation, school and transportation officials unveiled plans Friday to ensure the return to classes next fall will be safer throughout Idaho. First Lady Lori Otter joined elected officials, representatives of ITD, the Federal Highway Administration, Ada County Highway District, the Boise School District and a statewide coalition at an afternoon ceremony Friday.

Scan tour provides insight about auditing public/private projects
Carri Rosti, manager of ITD’s Office of Internal Review, was part of a team that visited five countries to learn about successful audit practices of public/private partnerships. She joined representatives from transportation departments in Texas, Alabama and Michigan, the Federal Highway Administration and transportation consultants on a two-week tour in May 2006.

Employee health insurance revised after recent meetings
The Idaho Department of Administration announced this week important changes to employee medical plans that will become effective July 1. Those changes emerged after a series of meetings in April and May when preliminary plans were outlined for state employees. Many of the proposed changes discussed during those meetings will not be implemented.

Groundbreaking affirms reason for highways
More than 100 people joined Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter, Idaho Transportation Board chairman Darrell Manning, board member Jim Coleman, Coeur d’Alene tribal chairman Chief Allan and other dignitaries May 23 in breaking ground on the first District 1 project to be funded using GARVEE (Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle) bonds.

District 1 honors employees
Andrea Storjohann, Scotty Fellom, Jim Roletto and Jason Minzghor took their turns at the grill to prepare juicy hamburgers and delicious hot dogs as a gift to employees in the district. The tables were laden with homemade baked beans, salads and other goodies that employees brought to share.

Deadline extended for ACE academy
Teenagers who would like a better view of their world are encouraged to enroll in the annual Aviation Career Exploration (ACE) Academy organized by the Idaho Transportation Departments Division of Aeronautics. The deadline for applying to the academy has been extended until 5 p.m. June 11. The cost is $100 per student, however several scholarships still are available. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by June 13.

Missouri engineer shares insights on 'Practical Design'

The Missouri Department of Transportation shares the same problem as many state transportation departments – more needs than money. However, MODOT’s chief engineer believes that his department has found a way to attack the problem through what he terms Practical Design.

Governor announces greenhouse gases initiative
Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter issued an executive order this week establishing a policy on the role of state government in reducing greenhouse gases, and tasking Department of Environmental Quality Director Toni Hardesty with coordinating the effort.
