things about this age in which we live is
the array of new technology tools at our disposal.
This technology delivers new products daily
that make the performance of our jobs faster
and more efficient. And each of us continues
to find ways to change and improve what we
do. Of all the technological advances
in the past two decades, though, none revolutionized
our workday more than the instrument you’re
using to read this message.

Thursday incident claims life of ITD's Art Fournier
The
transportation department today mourns the loss of Art
Fournier, a 13-year ITD employee who died late Thursday
afternoon while returning to the Caldwell maintenance
facility. Fournier was alone in a small ITD pick-up
truck, towing a trailer loaded with construction barrels,
when the vehicle left Old Highway 30 near Middleton.

Idaho
welcomes new governor
About 40 people were on hand last week
at the ITD Division of Aeronautics hangar at the Boise
Airport to welcome Idaho’s new governor, Jim Risch.
He was sworn in as Idaho’s 31st governor on Friday
(May 26) following Senate confirmation of Dirk Kempthorne
as Secretary of the Interior.

Sandcreek
excavation provides window to Sandpoint's past
Archaeologists are
uncovering Sandpoint's seedy underbelly, its working class
roots and even some of its prehistory on the Sand Creek
Peninsula. The work is being done to prepare for construction
of the U.S. 95 bypass, which will bisect the Sandpoint's
original town site. The cultural resources evaluation
is still in the testing phase, where archaeologists probe
for artifacts in hand-dug holes and use heavy equipment
to dig narrow trenches.

New e-mail standards take effect
ITD implemented a number of important changes to employee
use of e-mail this week, to address growing demand on
the system and its storage capacity. A memo distributed
to all ITD employees on April 10 outlined the changes
and reminds employees to use discretion when sending and
receiving e-mail.

emergency procedures during the annual Idaho Fire Chief’s
Association conference, May 4-5.

3 Roadeo winners announced
Juan Salinas of Caldwell emerged the top competitor in
this year's District 3 Roadeo that tests the skills of
employees who operate dump trucks and front end loaders.
Jeremie Gregory (Marsing) and Brian Inwards (Lowman) finished
second and third respectively.

1 honors employees with barbecue
District 1 managers assumed the role of servants –
cooks and waiters/waitresses – May 18 as part of
a statewide celebration of Employee Appreciation Week.
They donned aprons, picked up utensils and prepared a
barbecue feast for their fellow workers.

Senator
urges Idahoans to join the celebration
Sen. Mike Crapo: Cities and
towns along the (Lewis & Clark) route have sponsored
events and educational exploration opportunities for Idahoans
and visitors who are interested in experiencing this momentous
journey. New interpretive centers have been constructed
in Salmon, Lolo Pass, Weippe and Lewiston. This summer
might be the perfect time to do something like the Ambroses
did – make this learning experience one for the
whole family.

Mineta
declares war on congestion
Calling congestion
one of the single largest threats to the economy, U.S.
Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta this week
announced a new national initiative to tackle highway,
freight and aviation congestion. During remarks to the
National Retail Federation, Mineta said that “congestion
kills time, wastes fuel and costs money.”
