Gov. Risch appoints Frank Bruneel as board chair

Gov. Jim Risch announced last week the appointment of former Lewiston legislator Frank Bruneel as chair of the Idaho Transportation Board. The appointment was effective Thursday (June 9). He replaces Charles Winder who held the position since 1995.

Districts send best to State Roadeo Tuesday
Heavy equipment and dump truck jockeys from throughout Idaho will assemble Tuesday (June 13) at Dworshak Dam near Orofino for the annual ITD Truck Roadeo. The event tests skills of drivers in maneuvering equipment through an obstacle course and diagnosing “planted” equipment problems. The competition will be at the Dworshak Dam parking lot next to the boat launches.

Council to direct new 511 generation
A partnership of key state and private organizations met last month in Boise to make recommendations to the Idaho Transportation Board on future improvements to ITD’s 511 traveler services system. The Traveler Services System Advisory Council will provide critical review of the system’s information and delivery and help set priorities for improvements to the system.

Idaho's plate full of technology
Honoring science and technology developments by Idaho entrepreneurs and innovators, the state’s newest specialty license plate went on sale Friday (June 9). The Idaho Commerce & Labor’s Office of Science and Technology will use proceeds from sales of the specialty plate for programs to attract science and technology companies to locate or to expand their operations in Idaho.

Leaving their individual cars parked at home, 64 ITD employees walked, biked, rode a bus, joined a car pool, or caught one of the valley’s Communteride vans to work during the annual May in Motion alternative transportation promotion held last month in the Treasure Valley.

The 46,800-mile network of roadways, bridges and tunnels – built under the far-reaching law President Eisenhower signed on June 29, 1956 – is succumbing to the stresses of heavy use faster than money is being spent to upgrade it, transportation experts and lawmakers say.
