Workshop, retreat, business meeting planned next week
The Idaho Transportation Board will meet in a day-long workshop to consider revenue and economic outlooks as well as budget and other financial reports and the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program Tuesday in preparation for the regular June business meeting on Thursday. The workshop and business meeting are scheduled for the District 3 large conference room on Thursday.

D-3's John Gray turns horsepower into trophies
If you have a need for speed, and tight, hairpin turns with thundering horsepower don’t bother you, you needed to be in Marsing on Saturday (June 7). That’s where you’d have found the United States Sprint Boat Association (USSBA) setting up shop for the afternoon, and that’s where you’d have found District 3’s John Gray, waiting in his Super Modified #611 boat.

District IMAP 'coaches' announced
Randy Kyrias, Administrator of ITD’s Public Transportation division this week announced the selection of the first team of “coaches” for the new District Coordination Council. The council is part of Idaho’s Mobility Access Pathway (IMAP) that governs the future of public transportation.

ITD helps state police produce escape ramp video
When all else fails, a truck driver needs to know what to do. In such a situation, runaway truck ramps are the last resort for truck drivers to avoid disaster. The Idaho State Police Multimedia Group, in cooperation with the Idaho Transportation Department and Swift Transportation, videotaped the use of a runaway truck ramp on the Lewiston Hill on Wednesday morning.

Safety message delivered at Ag Expo
How do roads affect an industry like agriculture? A lot. That was one reason ITD was invited to take part in the Minico High School Ag Expo for the second consecutive year. The Ag Expo, sponsored by the Minico FFA (Future Farmers of America) and attended by students from throughout Minidoka County, featured wagon rides, a host of farm animals, prizes for students and many educational booths. But for Rupert Maintenance workers, it was an opportunity to talk about road safety.

Children learn how to build toothpick bridge
All you get is 250 toothpicks and 1.25 ounces of Elmer’s glue to construct a six-inch bridge. Do it right and it might hold 100 pounds. The first goal however, is hope that it will hold the three-pound bucket. The class was graded on the construction and design of their bridge, but breaking them was just for fun.

A popular tradition at District 6 is the employee benefit luncheon each spring and fall. Employees from around the district gather to eat and visit in a relaxed setting. Officials started the event 25 years ago as a way to recognize employee service.

Safety
In event of an earthquake, drop, take cover and hold on
In recognition of National Safety Month, the Transporter will publish a series of articles in June to promote safety. The ITD Safety Team encourages employees to put an extra focus this month into weekly safety meetings at work and to use the information at home as applicable. The focus this week is on personal responses during an earthquake.

In Memoriam

Fred Springer, 87
Fred Springer, a retired, 20-year ITD employee, passed away last weekend at a Nampa care facility at the age of 87. As a maintenance worker in District 3, Springer devoted his career to keeping highways plowed and snow-free in the winter and looked forward to the challenge of round-the-clock plowing when weather and highway conditions turned bad.

Highway funding
Governor's conferences to focus on revenue needs
Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has scheduled a series of meetings throughout Idaho to solicit input from local elected officials, business leaders and the public about alternatives to address the quarter-billion dollar revenue shortfall confronting Idaho’s transportation system. “Building Roads, Building Bridges, Building Consensus” will address the funding gap for infrastructure improvements throughout Idaho.

Director continues discussions with ITD employees
ITD Director Pam Lowe, along with Deputy Director Scott Stokes and division administrators, began meeting with employees this week in the Boise area as part of an annual outreach series to answer questions and receive input. The Employee Outreach Spring 2008 series began in April when Lowe met with employees in District 2.

License plates
New plates to benefit Special Olympics games in Idaho
New license plates went on sale Monday as a way of promoting the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games to be held in Idaho this winter. The new plates, approved by the 2008 Idaho Legislature, are available at county automobile licensing offices throughout the state.

ITD seeks to expand engineering program at high school
More than 100 Columbia High School students in Nampa benefited from the expertise of six ITD engineers this winter during the introduction of the TRAC (Transportation and Civil Engineering) educational program. Six ITD engineers rotated into Columbia classrooms, integrating engineering principles into three disciplines, or PACS, as the program refers to the modules.
