New board chairman has unique perspective of transportation
Summoned
from retirement and a modest 60-acre cattle ranch near
McCall, Frank Bruneel finds himself in familiar territory
as he becomes chairman of the Idaho Transportation Board.
He paused briefly from a full schedule of introductory
meetings with ITD staff and reminisced about his childhood.
The second-floor windows at Headquarters offered a panorama
of the Boise Foothills and busy State Street, which
some six decades earlier Bruneel called home.

Idaho
helps celebrate interstate's 50th anniversary in Utah
With historic Promontory Point standing
like a sentinel on the horizon, dignitaries reflected
Monday (June 19) on the forces that joined America’s
shorelines and linked its people. What the transcontinental
railroads did in 1869 with the driving of a golden
spike and marriage of two railroad building enterprises,
the interstate highway system replicated in the 20th
century – the results of visionary President
Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Convoy
demonstrates importance of interstate system
It
was a fitting scene for a landmark celebration: big
trucks, men and women on motorcycles, and the rush
of traffic on I-80. As part of a month-long celebration
of the 50th anniversary of the nation's interstate
highway system, a group of visiting dignitaries —
in trucks, cars and on motorcycles — stopped
at Sugarhouse Park on Monday to talk about the benefits
of America's interstates. I-80, which was clogged
with morning traffic, was the backdrop for the gathering.

Palmer advance to national 'Roadeo'
Robin
Freeman and Dave Palmer will represent the Idaho Transportation
Department at the annual Western Snow and Ice Conference
Snow Roadeo competition Sept. 25-29 in Estes Park, Colo.
Freeman, a lead worker from District 3’s Council
maintenance facility, returns to the national competition.
Palmer, also a lead worker from the south & East Maintenance
facility in Coeur d’Alene, will represent ITD for
the first time.

High
school junior takes (ceremonial) reins of ITD
Julie Holesinsky hasn’t had a driver’s license
for two years yet. But last week the Caldwell High School
junior took the reins of the Idaho’s second-largest
state agency – the Idaho Transportation Department.She
experienced what it was like to occupy the director’s
office and oversee a department of more than 1,800 employees.

EAL
to be paid out June 30
As a result of a directive from the Division of Financial
Management (DFM), all employees who carry a balance of
earned administrative leave (EAL) will be paid for that
leave on the June 30 paycheck. The balance payout affects
nearly 270 ITD employees, according to Human Resources.
Employees will receive written notification in the next
few days.

New
paygrades take effect July 1
The Idaho Division
of Human Resources has designed a new pay grade structure
in response to legislative direction contained in H844
earlier this year. The pay range for each state classified
job, including those at the transportation department,
will change from a schedule based solely on Hay Points
to a combination of Hay Points and Market Average salary
survey data.

Short-term merit increases to expire June 30
ITD employees who qualified for and have been receiving
short-term merit increases since February will receive
the last one on their June 30 paycheck. The Transportation
Board authorized the short-term merit increases in January;
the increases began to appear on employee paychecks on
the February 24 pay date.

COMPASS
extends deadline for comments
The board of the
Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS),
at its monthly meeting Tuesday (June 20) extended the
deadline to adopt Communities in Motion: Regional Long-Range
Transportation Plan for up to 60 days – through
September.
