Like their counterparts across the country, Idaho drivers will hit the roads this weekend for an extended Fourth of July vacation, turning Wednesday’s holiday into a longer break from work. ITD urges you to drive carefully wherever your travels take you – whether to a nearby picnic area, recreational campground, or on cross-state vacation.

Still vibrant and growing at 117 years

The occasion of Idaho’s 117th birthday on July 3 is a great time to highlight some of the reasons that each of us can proudly claim the title “Idahoan.” People who work in governmental affairs for industries and organizations tend to get a (generally undeserved) bad rap. But it was, in fact, a mining lobbyist who created the name “Idaho” back in the 1860s.

Allen named District 1 Engineer

Damon Allen expects to look back as he begins to look forward – drawing on recent experience as an assistant engineer in District 3 and Roadway Design Engineer at Headquarters in preparation for his new position – District 1 Engineer in Coeur d’Alene.
ITD Chief Engineer Steve Hutchinson announced Allen’s selection Tuesday.

Board considers FY09 budget request
ITD staff members summarized the proposed Capital Investment Program for fiscal years 2008-2012 for the Idaho Transportation Board when it met June 18-20 in Boise .Because of limited funding, operations was established as the top priority, followed respectively by preservation, restoration and expansion. The total appropriation request is $489.3 million, including $303.3 million in federal funds.

Report ranks Idaho transportation system 10th
Idaho remains among the nation’s leaders in the efficient operation of its transportation system, according to an independent national report issued Thursday by the Reason Foundation, a public policy organization based in Los Angeles. The 16th annual report on the Performance of State Highway Systems ranks Idaho 10th nationally for efficient management of the system.

Workshops provides help in crafting Safe Routes proposals
Recipients of ITD’s recent Safe Routes to School (SR2S) funding awards spent most of Wednesday learning how to turn funded proposals into working activities. Several national Safe Routes to School authorities were on hand for the workshop, presented by ITD in Boise. The Skills for Local Program Development training provided 26 participants with practical approaches, community-tested processes and tools to develop and implement their local SR2S projects.

Comment period opens for STIP input
The draft Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for fiscal years 2008-2012 is available statewide for public comment. The document identifies approximately $1 billion in transportation-related projects planned for construction through the year 2012, plus those planned for the first two bonding authorizations of the GARVEE (Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle) Program as approved by the Idaho Legislature.

HRS introduces new vehicle for announcing openings
In an effort to keep ITD competitive within the labor market it is imperative the department use tools that can increase exposure to potential job applicants. The office is in the early stages of developing a new approach to recruiting employees for the Department. HRS recently implemented an all-employee e-mail distribution that is generated each time a job announcement is made.

Internal search begins for PT administrator
Larry Falkner recently announced his plans to retire as Administrator of the Division of Public Transportation in late August after 12 years in the position. He joined ITD in 1994 after a long and successful career as a business development manager with Morrison Knudsen Corp. (now Washington Group International). The internal search for Falkner’s successor will close at the end of the workday on Friday, July 6.

ITD adopts gold standard for commuting
ITD’s Treasure Valley employees struck gold in May. Efforts to use alternative transportation as part of the May in Motion campaign garnered “gold” status for ITD, announced Janelle Catlin, coordinator of employee transportation. She and other ITD representatives attended an awards luncheon this week to accept the honor.
