Interim Director Bower outlines goals
to continue ITD's momentum

Interim Director Dwight Bower discussed his goals and detailed organizational changes in a meeting held Tuesday with the department’s executive team and division business managers. Dwight is serving as the department’s interim director for five months while the transportation board begins a search for a permanent director. Dwight outlined five priorities for the immediate future.

Former DMV administrator Pam Lowe named deputy director

Pam Lowe returns, after a short respite, to the Idaho Transportation Department as the new deputy director, succeeding Charlie Rountree who recently announced his retirement. Interim Director Dwight Bower announced Lowe’s appointment to the department’s No. 2 position this week. She began her new assignment Thursday (Sept. 7). Lowe served as Administrator of ITD’s Division of Motor Vehicles for nearly two years before leaving in May

Ekern selected as new Director of Virginia DOT

Dave Ekern, who retired last months after serving as Director of the Idaho Transportation Department, was named this morning as director of the Virginia Department of Transportation. Virginia Gov. timothy M. Kaine made the announcement during a 10:30 a.m. (MDT) news conference in Richmond.

Highway safety summit targets traffic fatalities
Safety professionals and law enforcement officials will gather in Boise on Tuesday for the Idaho Highway Safety Summit. The event is sponsored by the ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety (OHOS) and will be at the DoubleTree Riverside Hotel, 2900 Chinden Blvd. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Summit sessions will focus on efforts to achieve a goal of eliminating deaths on Idaho highways.

ITD to participate in emergency workshop
The Idaho Transportation Department, emerging as a major partner in disaster preparedness and training, joins other local, state and federal agencies this month in focusing on a cooperative approach to emergency responses. Representatives from all six ITD districts and Headquarters are expected to participate in the 2006 Idaho Prepared! Conference next week in Burley.

Operation Lifesaver emphasizes rail/highway safety
A licensed train engineer from Pocatello, Chris Arvis has experienced 15 train/vehicle collisions, involving too many fatalities during his career. Although he still is licensed to operate locomotives, Arvis spends his days working to improve rail crossings through an aggressive educational campaign, better engineering and increased law enforcement.

Avoid stresses that lead to burnout
Most of us at times have felt overwhelmed by the pressures of work and the demands of family life. Usually, we can find ways to put life back on an even keel: take a day off, get a good night’s sleep, or talk things over with a trusted friend or loved one. "Burnout" happens when strategies like these fail, and a person feels physically and emotionally drained by the stress of daily life.

Farewell event planned Sept. 15 for Chuck Winder
ITD employees have an opportunity to thank Chuck Winder for his 11 years of service on the transportation board and to wish him well in his continued business and public service pursuits during an informal reception Friday, Sept. 15 at Headquarters. The reception will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the auditorium.
