Eric Shannon named new District 3 Engineer
District 3 has a new District Engineer, and he is a familiar face. Chief Engineer Jim Ross Thursday announced Assistant District 3 Engineer Eric Shannon will replace Pamela Lowe, who was promoted to head the Division of Motor Vehicles last month.

A matter of survival
Borrowing from a popular television series, Ken Stewart referees a weekly “Survivor” competition that is slowly whittling down a field of 16 players. All are members of a transition team that is implementing a new financial management system at the transportation department. At times, the work is mentally taxing. Patience and perseverance are important virtues in the year-long process.

Truck crash closes Interstate 84 for six hours
ITD maintenance, traffic and emergency crews responded to a major crash on Interstate 84 Tuesday involving an unloaded log truck, a semi-truck and trailer combination, and a passenger pickup truck. Both westbound lanes were closed for more than six hours while crews cleaned up diesel and debris scattered along the interstate.

ITD donates motel for disaster training
Five weeks of emergency preparedness training will culminate in the destruction of a two-story wood structure the transportation department recently acquired. The property will be part of the Sand Creek Byway project in Sandpoint. The building’s demise is a perfect fit for an extensive training exercise presented by Idaho State University’s Institute of Emergency Management in cooperation with the Idaho Bureau of Homeland Security (IBHS).

Administrative workshop to focus on change
Frederick Wilcox said, “Progress involves risks. You can’t steal second and keep your foot on first.” And you can’t have progress without change. If nothing changes, you’ll stay on first base. Changes are constantly occurring in the transportation arena, and the focus of this year’s Administrative Workshop is change, with a theme of “Riding the Waves of Change.”

PERSI session canceled; new one added
ITD employees will have the first opportunity to register for an all-day PERSI 505 session at the Holiday Inn on Vista Avenue on Oct. 28. Registration also is possible at the location, beginning at 8 a.m. The workshop, designed for state employees who are within five years of retirement, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Hunters asked to help prevent weed spread
The approach of fall is accompanied by the haunting sound of bugling elk emanating from Idaho’s forests. Many hunters will travel to forests and mountains to fill their tags for big game. Idaho hunters are as likely to encounter noxious weeds as they are big game. Idaho’s weed officials hope hunters won’t spread weeds during their hunting expedition.

Please join in bidding farewell to John Tomkinson
ITD employees will assemble Tuesday in the auditorium at Headquarters to formally wish John Tomkinson well as he trades General Services for general retirement. Thirty-two years of service will come to a close later this fall, but with accrued leave, his last day in the office will be Tuesday. Please join in wishing him well from 10 a.m. to noon. Congratulations John. The shape of ITD today has been greatly influenced by your initiative and dedication.
