Board hears about benefits of landscaping projects
Idaho Transportation Board members were reminded Sept. 22 that a 21st century highway system consists of more than black asphalt or gray concrete. The system comes in an array of natural colors achieved through a commitment to roadside landscaping. Dammon Allen, Assistant District 3 Engineer, provided a summary of landscaping projects throughout the state to board members during their final monthly meeting on the road.

Fernandez chosen to coordinate GARVEE projects
Nestor Fernandez, whose transportation career began 22 years ago in Mexico and spans nearly two decades with the Idaho Transportation Department, assumed responsibilities this week for administering the state’s GARVEE-bonded construction program. In his new position, Fernandez will help shape Idaho’s transportation future by coordinating Gov. Kempthorne’s Connecting Idaho initiative.

Three digits will change way we get travel information

Three digits – 511 – will soon join 411 and 911 as important phone numbers everyone needs to know. Idaho’s 511 traveler information service will launch in November, providing road and weather information by phone and Internet. Travelers can connect to the service by simply dialing 511 or logging on to 511.idaho.gov.

Delegates from Montenegro to tour DMV, Traffic and Safety
A small delegation from the former Soviet bloc nation of Montenegro will spend part of Friday (Oct. 7) learning how Drivers Services, law enforcement and safety programs are administered in Idaho.

Districts 5, 6 join for maintenance fair
Maintenance personnel from districts 5 and 6 went back to the classroom for a day Thursday to learn about a multitude of topics from bridge-building to quick clearance. Nearly 75 ITD employees attended the fourth annual Maintenance Fair at the District 6 yard in Rigby. They were engaged in six 50-minute classes taught by experts in their respective fields.

Grant awarded to help I.F. attract new air service
A proposal to attract a new commercial carrier to the Idaho Falls Airport received much needed financial support recently when the U.S. Department of Transportation announced approval of a $500,000 grant. The award is part of the transportation department’s Small Community Air Service Development Program

Insurance open enrollment continues
There is still plenty of time to enroll in a supplemental life insurance plan through NCPERS (National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems). Until Nov. 30, ITD employees can add additional coverage during the open enrollment period. The next opportunity to enroll will be the next open enrollment period.

DOROLCO to sponsor Autumnfest at HQ
The Headquarters-based ITD employee organization will sponsor Autumnfest Thursday (Oct. 6) from 11:30 a.m. to 1;15 p.m. in the break room. The event will include a baked potato bar with salad, pies and beverages and a display of ATV safety information provided by the Headquarters Safety Committee.

The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has added a new service that will allow motorists in nine counties to request their current county plate number when replacing their license plates online.
