Benzon injured while walking on Headquarters campus
Doug Benzon, a 35-year ITD employee, was seriously injured this morning while walking in a crosswalk on the Headquarters campus. A woman driving through the campus apparently failed to see him in the crosswalk between the Office of Highway Operations and Safety
parking area and the main building.

Highway safety plan among meeting topics
The Idaho Transportation Board will meet next week in Boise to consider project reports and to participate in the annual Headquarters employee service awards presentation. The meeting will begin Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the Headquarters auditorium. The monthly business meeting will resume on Thursday with an executive session (closed to the public) at 8 a.m. and conclude with old business.

Snow plow simulator offers realistic feel of winter maintenance
Unlike the video game that turns youngsters into racecar drivers, the animated view of ITD’s snowplow simulator teaches drivers to watch for hazards while clearing highways. The simulator, packed into a trailer that has toured the state the past two years, made its last stop in Boise recently. New snowplow drivers and veterans who wanted to touch up their skills, put the simulator through its paces at the District 3 office.

Motorists urged to use caution around snow plows
As winter weather approaches, ITD reminds motorists to use caution when traveling the state's highways during inclement weather and to cooperate with highway workers clearing the roadways. Before beginning a trip, make sure car windows, mirrors and lights are clear of snow. Keep windshield washers filled with a non-freezing solution all winter.

Headquarters to present service awards Wednesday
The Idaho Transportation Board, along with colleagues and friends, will honor employees Wednesday who have reached employment milestones at a 2 p.m. ceremony in the Headquarters auditorium. ITD Chief Engineer Tom Cole will serve as emcee, and board vice chairman Neil Miller (District 5) will provide opening remarks. Sixty Headquarters employees will receive awards for service longevity.

ITD to receive employer of year award at Dec. 3 banquet
ITD will be honored as Employer of the Year by the Treasure Valley Chapter of WTS: Advancing Women in Transportation at its Dec. 3 awards banquet in Boise. The Vista Interchange project and Stanley Consultants, the project designer, also will be honored as the Innovative Transportation Solutions award winner, for a project or service that improves the quality of life for its users and community.

Younger generation less apt to consider online hazards
Four out of 10 Americans ages 18-24 (frequently referred to as "Millennials") will spend up to five hours shopping online using their work computer this holiday season. This same age group is the least worried about the vulnerability of their work computers, creating an increased risk of spam, viruses and phishing attacks in the workplace.

Public invited to January 'Grand Rededication'
The Idaho State Capitol Commission invites the public to a "Grand Rededication Ceremony" on Jan.9, at noon in downtown Boise. The commission is preparing a formal, but brief re-opening ceremony on the Capitol’s southern steps. The public will enjoy a housewarming immediately following for the remainder of Saturday afternoon.

Workshop focuses on reducing traffic related deaths in Idaho
Ensuring safe travel on Idaho’s highways was the primary focus for highway safety professionals from throughout the state who met in Boise Wednesday. The Idaho Transportation Department sponsored the all-day workshop that included discussion and strategies for improving safety. “Safety for users is ITD’s highest priority,” said ITD Acting Director L. Scott Stokes.

Governor leads ceremony to open third lane of I-84
Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter joined citizens, business leaders and government officials this afternoon to celebrate the opening of new lanes on Interstate 84 between the Garrity and Meridian interchanges. The project is improving safety, reducing congestion and creating career-path jobs to stimulate Idaho's economy.

Upgraded Web site offers wealth of research information
ITD’s Research Section recently launched an improved program Web site that serves as a storehouse of information and valuable Internet links to transportation-related research. Research Program Manager Ned Parrish and his staff of Inez Hopkins and Brenda Wynn began working with a Boise State University intern last spring to upgrade the Web site.

ITD exploring use of social media to serve customers
Development of new Internet sites provide government agencies with a variety of communication options that didn’t exist a decade ago. Among them are Facebook. MySpace, Twitter, Linked-In, Youtube and Flickr. Like many transportation departments across the country, ITD is assessing how social media sites can help reach new, technology-sophisticated customers.

Storjohann completing third year
as regional Order of Eastern Star coordinator
Andrea Paroni Storjohann, assistant district Engineer in District 1, is completing a three-year term as the Northwest Region Coordinator for the Visionquest Program of the General Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. The Visionquest Program is a leadership development program for Eastern Star members.

Son of ITD planner wins international Web site award
NewReleaseTuesday.com a Christian music, social and entertainment mega-site and part of the FrontGate Media group, has been recognized with the 2009 WebAward for Standard of Excellence in Web Development in the Faith-based category. The annual competition, now in its 13th year, welcomed more than 2,000 entries in about 96 categories and 45 countries.
