Board approves, forwards 2010-13 STIP
The Idaho Transportation Board approved the FY10-13 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) when it met in Boise Nov. 18, 19. The comprehensive document that guides project selection and funding also shows the highway, public transportation, aeronautics and highway safety projects planned for funding in the next four federal fiscal years.

Women in Transportation
ITD named Employer of Year
The Idaho Transportation Department is a pretty good place to work. That was the assessment of the Treasure Valley chapter of Women in Transportation, which presented ITD with the Employer of the Year award during at Thursday ceremony in Boise. Acting Director Scott Stokes accepted the award on behalf of ITD’s workforce of 1,833 employees.

Highways
District 2 clearing way for mammoth loads

LEWISTON - A piece of a refinery bound for Canada is scheduled to make a three-day journey from Lewiston to Montana, temporarily blocking both lanes on U.S. Highway 12 this June. ITD has approved a plan by Imperial Oil/ExxonMobile to ship a test verification module along that route in what may be the first of 30 to 40 such trips, said Doral Hoff, ITD's district maintenance engineer in Lewiston.

2009 was a banner year for D-3 construction
Construction trucks and road equipment were everywhere in District 3 during 2009; from plowing forward in the monumental task of building the second generation of  I-84 to resurfacing Idaho Highway 44 (State Street), giving motorists a silky smooth new driving surface.

Ten Mile Bridge coming down
The Ten Mile bridge over I-84 is coming down Dec. 11, the last of three long-standing interstate bridges (all over 40 years of age) in the Treasure Valley that will have disappeared since late October. First it was the old Orchard bridge that came down Oct. 23 & 24. The demolition on Vista bridge started Nov. 30.

New signs to improve I-84 commute
The Interstate 84 commute between Nampa and Meridian is being improved with additional signs to encourage motorists to merge earlier and avoid congestion in the Black Cat and Ten Mile area. That's where ITD warns the highway narrows temporarily from three lanes to two. Construction on I-84 in the six-mile stretch continues.

District 6 honors employees for service, safety
D-6 Engineer Blake Rindlisbacher and Assistant D-6 Engineer Karen Hiatt presented service and safety awards to employees at the district benefit luncheons this spring and fall. District 6 administrators offer their congratulations to their colleagues.

Report says 9, 500 projects 'Ready to Go,' await federal funds
State transportation departments have identified 9,500 highway, bridge, transit, port, rail, and aviation projects worth more than $69 billion that, if funded, can be used to create hundreds of thousands of jobs across the country.
House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman James Oberstar (D-MN), House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (D-WI) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) joined Horsley at a Capitol Hill news conference this week in releasing the report.

D-1 employees prevent disaster on interstate
The best form of emergency response is prevention, as two ITD employees in District 1 will attest. Heroic efforts of Tyler Carrico and Calvin Vork, who were operating snowplows recently on Interstate 90 east of Coeur d’Alene averted a major disaster.

Reconstructed Midvale rest area open for Thanksgiving
The newly refurbished rest area on U.S. 95 at Midvale Hill in rural Washington County is expected to open Wednesday (Nov. 25), just in time to provide relief for Thanksgiving holiday travelers. Consider it an oasis in a big desert ... the rest area is 88 miles south of the nearest rest area – Sheep Creek on US 95 – and 100 miles north of the nearest one at Snake River View on I-84 near Ontario.

Camera to document progress on bridge project
A live look at the Twin Falls Alternate Route Rock Creek crossing is now available for people interested in the current status of construction, the Idaho Transportation Department has announced. The construction cameras are designed to capture the daily progress during the removal of the dirt fill and construction of the new Rock Creek bridge.
