UPDATE: Idaho 55 scheduled to close between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday
BOISE - Idaho 55 north of Horseshoe Bend is scheduled to close Friday evening between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
The closure of both lanes will allow fire crews to set a controlled burn on the east side of Idaho 55, and in an area south of the Banks-to-Lowman road.
The closure will be from milepost 77 to milepost 78.5.
On Friday afternoon, both lanes of Idaho 55 were open. The recommended speed limit in the area was 35 miles per hour. Idaho State Police vehicles and transportation department vehicles were on the highway to encourage motorists to observe the recommended limit.
If the controlled burn goes as planned Friday evening, Idaho 55 will reopen after 10 p.m. with one lane of travel. Pilot vehicles will guide motorists through the area, with northbound and southbound vehicles taking turns driving through the section.
If transportation department personnel decide the route is safe for two-way traffic, both lanes of Idaho 55 will open at about noon on Saturday.
The Idaho 55 section that is north of Horseshoe Bend and south of the Banks-to-Lowman road closed Tuesday at about 12:30 p.m. when the Chief Parrish Fire started burning close to the highway. One lane was reopened on Wednesday.
