Preparations begin today (Sept. 10) for GARVEE-funded I-84 pavement rehabilitation in Boise
BOISE - Preparation work on the I-84 Broadway Interchange to Eisenman Interchange pavement rehabilitation project begins today (Sept. 10), the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced. This GARVEE-funded construction project is the largest to occur on this section of I-84 since it was built in the 1960's.
The preparation work includes building crossovers in the medians so traffic can be re-routed during the project. The work will require brief nighttime lane restrictions near the Broadway and Eisenman interchanges from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning tonight.
The pavement rehabilitation work, which starts Sept. 17, will improve 6.1-miles of pavement on I-84 between the Broadway and Eisenman interchanges. The project is expected to be complete in summer 2008. Western Construction of Boise is the contractor for the $12 million project.
"When complete, this project will extend the life of the pavement 20 years and create a smoother ride for motorists," said ITD District Engineer Dave Jones. "This work is the start of a major transformation for this crucial corridor."
The project is part of a series of Interstate 84 improvements funded by the GARVEE Transportation Program east and west of the WYE Interchange in the Treasure Valley. The program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to build needed improvements throughout the state in less time than through traditional funding methods.
Other I-84 East Corridor GARVEE projects (Orchard Street to Eisenmen Road) include:
- I-84, Cole Interchange to Broadway Interchange Soundwalls (estimated construction to begin Spring 2008).
- Construction of a third east- and westbound lane on I-84 from west of Orchard Street to Broadway Avenue (construction requires additional funding).
- Reconstruction of the Orchard Street Interchange (estimated construction to begin Summer 2008).
- Reconstruction of the Vista Avenue Interchange (construction requires additional funding).
I-84 West Corridor GARVEE projects (Caldwell to Meridian) include:
- I-84, Eagle Road Westbound Off-ramp widening (completion Sept. 11).
- I-84, Garrity Interchange to Meridian Interchange pavement rehabilitation and additional third lane in each direction. Includes reconstruction of Black Cat and Robinson Road overpasses (estimated construction to begin Fall 2007).
- I-84, Nampa Franklin Interchange, to reconstuct the second half of the bridge which was widened in 1999 (estimated construction to start Spring 2008).
- Ten Mile Road Interchange Project (estimated construction to begin 2009).
- I-84, Karcher Interchange to Five Mile Road Environmental Study to determine long-term project needs for the corridor (estimated study completion 2010).
- Idaho 16, 1-84 to South Emmett Corridor, an environmental study of a future extension of Idaho 16 south to connect with I-84 (estimated study completion late 2009).
- I-84, Nampa Franklin Interchange to Garrity Interchange, to add a
third lane in each direction (requires additional funding for construction).
