I-84 returns to normal traffic following fiery collision at Broadway Interchange; restrictions on overpass remain
BOISE - Interstate 84 completely reopened to traffic at 1:45 p.m. today following a fiery collision at the Broadway Interchange last night that closed the eastbound interstate, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. The Broadway Overpass will remain closed to southbound traffic at least until Wednesday.
Bridge experts from ITD examined the overpass bridge today and determined it sustained significant heat damage when a semi truck collided with another truck and burst into flames. The bridge was not struck in the accident but will require repairs at a later date to address the heat-related damage.
The semi truck hit a directional sign truck being driven by an ITD employee who was assisting with brooming operations on the right shoulder. A brooming truck was in front of the directional sign truck, also being driven by an ITD employee. Neither of the ITD employees were seriously hurt, however the driver of the semi truck was killed in the collision.
ITD will attempt to reopen the Broadway Avenue Overpass Wednesday or Thursday to southbound traffic. However, trucks with individual axle weight over 9,000 lbs. will not be allowed on the southbound lanes. The northbound lanes received less damage and will not require weight restrictions.
A cost estimate for repairs has not been determined.
