Southbound Interstate 84 Broadway Overpass closed to all commercial truck traffic
BOISE - The southbound Interstate 84 Broadway Overpass was closed to all commercial truck traffic at 9 a.m. today (Sept. 21), the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced.
Too many commercial trucks were continuing to use the overpass despite an axle weight restriction of 9,000 lbs announced Wednesday (Sept. 19). Signs are in place directing commercial trucks to the Vista Overpass and truckers need to use that alternate route.
The northbound lanes still have no restrictions.
The overpass was damaged by a fiery collision Monday night between a semi truck and an Idaho Transportation Department directional sign truck. The ITD truck was being used to assist with brooming operations on the right shoulder of the interstate at the Broadway Interchange.
Bridge experts from ITD examined the overpass bridge and determined it sustained significant heat damage when the semi truck burst into flames. The bridge was not struck in the accident but will require repairs at a later date to address the heat-related damage.
A cost estimate for repairs has not been determined.
