Kickoff ceremony on Thursday (Sept. 27) will celebrate upcoming improvements to I-84 East
BOISE - Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter and Idaho Senate Transportation Committee Chairman John McGee will officially kick off construction on the I-84 East corridor at a ceremony on Thursday (Sept. 27), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Eisenman Interchange. Gov. Otter will give the keynote address. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Otter will operate an excavator to officially kick-off work for the I-84 East corridor.

Construction began on the I-84 East corridor earlier this month with the I-84 Broadway to Eisenman project. The project rehabilitates 6.1 miles of deteriorated pavement on I-84 that was originally built in 1968. Future projects include building soundwalls between the Cole and Broadway interchanges, replacing the interchanges at Vista Avenue and Orchard Street and widening the interstate between the Cole and Vista interchanges.

The corridor improvements are funded through the GARVEE Transportation Program, which uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to fund highway projects in less time than through traditional funding methods.

The Eisenman Interchange will be closed to traffic during the kickoff ceremony. Attendees will be directed to park on the interchange overpass (Exit 59A from Boise). The public is invited to attend.

Residents and businesses also are encouraged to attend an Oct. 2 open house at Idaho Ice World (7072 S. Eisenman Rd. in Boise) to learn about upcoming traffic impacts. The open house will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

ITD expects the I-84 Broadway to Eisenman project to be completed by Summer 2008. Western Construction of Boise is the contractor for the $12 million project.

NOTE TO EDITORS: MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES ATTENDING THE CEREMONY WILL BE ESCORTED TO THE EXCAVATION SITE WITH GOVERNOR OTTER.
