Interstate 84 Broadway Overpass will close to southbound traffic for bridge repairs Sunday (Oct. 7)
BOISE - The southbound lanes of the Broadway Overpass will close to traffic on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 11:30 p.m. to allow repair work on an overpass section damaged in a fiery collision last month, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced.
ITD expects the repair work to be complete by mid-November. The damaged bridge span of the southbound lanes will be demolished over a long weekend, scheduled for Oct. 11-15 (Thurs. - Mon.). The new supports and deck will then be rebuilt.
The bridge repair work has been added to the 6.1-mile I-84 Broadway to Eisenman pavement rehabilitation project, which began in September. ITD has added the bridge repairs to its agreement with Western Construction of Boise, the contractor for the project.
"We have limited time to finish the bridge repairs before winter," said Dave Jones, ITD District 3 Engineer. "Combining the projects gives us the opportunity to coordinate the two projects and avoid delays to either."
Motorists should expect the following traffic changes during October:
- The I-84 westbound on- and off-ramps at Broadway Avenue will close at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5. The off-ramp will reopen at 6 a.m. Oct. 8. The on-ramp will reopen at 8 p.m. Oct. 7 to accommodate the BSU Bronco football game Sunday evening. These ramp restrictions will allow crews to dig out concrete under the bridge for the pavement rehabilitation.
- Starting Oct. 7 at 11:30 p.m. (after the BSU Bronco football game), the southbound lanes of the Broadway Overpass will be closed to all traffic for bridge repairs. Motorists may access Broadway south of the bridge via Federal Way. Traffic north of the bridge can access eastbound I-84 at Vista Avenue or Gowen Road.
- Bridge demolition is scheduled for Oct. 11-15. One lane of northbound traffic will be open on the other half of the bridge. All eastbound interstate traffic under the bridge will be reduced to one lane and shifted to westbound I-84. The eastbound on- and off-ramps at Broadway Avenue will be closed.
- As part of the pavement rehabilitation project, the I-84 eastbound on- and off-ramps at Broadway Avenue will be closed during the last two weekends in October. Weekend hours begin at 8 a.m. Friday and end at 6 a.m. Monday.
- Eastbound I-84 will be reduced to one lane at night (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.) between the Broadway and Gowen interchanges, as part of the pavement rehabilitation project.
