I-84 East pavement reconstruction ceases for winter
BOISE - Construction on the I-84 East corridor will stop for the winter on Wednesday, Nov. 21, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
Work began in mid-September to rehabilitate 6.1 miles of I-84 between the Broadway and Eisenman interchanges. When finished, the project will be the largest improvement to this section of interstate since it was built in the 1960s.
Crews worked an accelerated construction schedule to complete the first two layers of asphalt before winter. Winter travelers will drive on the new pavement until next spring, when a final layer can be completed.
"The new road surface is in time for holiday shoppers," said Jennifer Jacobs, general manager of the Boise Factory Outlets. "Our customers and tenants have been looking forward to a smoother ride," said Jacobs.
The $12 million I-84 Broadway to Eisenman project is part of a series of I-84 improvements in the GARVEE Transportation Program over the next six years. Preparations will begin later this winter to add a third lane to I-84 between the Garrity and Meridian interchanges.
The GARVEE Transportation Program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to fund needed improvements in less time than through traditional funding methods.
