ITD to increase safety signage on SH-55 Eagle Road in spring
MERIDIAN -The Idaho Transportation Department will begin increasing safety signage next spring on seven miles of State Highway 55 Eagle Road, from Interstate 84 to State Highway 44. This effort is part of a safety corridor pilot project aimed at reducing crashes by enhancing driver awareness traveling 18 signalized intersections on Idaho's busiest non-interstate highway.
ITD, partnering with Idaho State Police and local cities, initiated a SH-55 Safety Task Force to consider options in 2023, teaming with Meridian city staff and the Meridian Police Department. A public update was presented to the Meridian City Council in September 2023 and again in June for feedback, and two public open houses were held in August in Meridian and Eagle to gather input to incorporate into the final design of this important two-year safety corridor pilot. Installation of variable speed limit signs and driver speed feedback signs by ITD crews is scheduled for spring on SH-55 Eagle Road, to inform drivers of traffic conditions.
Additionally, as presented at the previously held public meetings, ITD plans to remove four mid-block left-turns at the following locations to help reduce crashes on SH-55:
- Southbound left-in at Meadowdale Street
- Northbound left-in Baldcypress Street
- Southbound U-turn near Ustick Road
- Northbound left-in at Lanark Street
