ITD warns that a telephone call offering to renew your license plates is a scam
BOISE - If you receive a telephone call asking to renew your license plates, it's a scam, the Idaho Transportation Department is warning.

"ITD recently received a few telephone calls from customers asking if it is a common practice for county DMV offices to offer to renew vehicle registrations by telephone," said Amy Smith, ITD vehicle services manager.

She added that some county DMV offices have also been contacted by customers about receiving such fictitious calls.

"DMV offices do not solicit vehicle registration renewals by telephone," she said. "In Idaho, vehicle registrations can be renewed in person, by mail or online (if your county participates) at www.itd.idaho.gov, then click on DMV."

Smith recommends that if an individual receives one of these calls, they should try to get as much information as possible about the caller and then contact local law enforcement immediately.

Those individuals who believe they are victims of identity theft, may contact the Idaho Attorney General's Office Consumer Protection Division at 1-208-334-2424 or toll free at 1-800-432-3545.
