ITD warns that a telephone calls offering to renew license plates are a scam
BOISE - Telephone calls asking individuals to renew license plates are a scam and should be reported, the Idaho Transportation Department warns.
"ITD recently learned that additional phone calls have been received by more customers in the Magic Valley area asking if they wanted to renew their vehicle registrations by phone, this is not a common practice for county DMV offices." said Amy Smith, ITD vehicle services manager.
She added that a few other county DMV offices also have been contacted by customers about receiving such fictitious calls.
"DMV offices do not solicit vehicle registration renewals by telephone," she explained. "In Idaho, vehicle registrations can be renewed in person, by mail or online (if your county participates) at www.itd.idaho.gov, then click on DMV."
Smith recommends that if an individual receives one of these calls, they should try to get as much information as possible about the caller and then contact local law enforcement immediately.
Individuals who believe they are victims of identity theft may contact the Idaho Attorney General's Office Consumer Protection Division at 1-208-334-2424 or toll free at 1-800-432-3545.
