ITD will test foundation types for new I-84 Ten Mile Interchange this month
BOISE - Tests will begin on Tuesday (Feb. 19) to determine the foundation design for the new Ten Mile Interchange bridge, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
On Feb. 19, 20 and 21, crews will pound three sizes of steel piles into the interchange site and test how much weight each can support. Tests results will help ITD design the foundation with the correct number of piles, reducing noise and saving money during the construction process.
A second, shorter test will occur in early March. Both tests will cause loud, pounding sounds between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ITD restricted the work to daytime hours to reduce impacts to nearby residents.
ITD received approval of the project environmental assessment earlier this month. Construction could begin in summer 2009 and will depend on future funding.
The Idaho Transportation Board has requested $61 million in Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds from the 2008 Idaho Legislature for the Ten Mile Interchange project. The GARVEE Transportation Program uses bond proceeds to construct highway improvements in less time than through traditional funding methods.
