Pavement work Monday and Tuesday nights (April 7-8) will finish rut removal on I-84 between Garrity and Meridian interchanges
BOISE - Pavement work on Interstate 84 Monday and Tuesday nights (April 7-8) will complete rut removal between the Garrity and Meridian interchanges, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced.
Weather permitting, ITD will lay asphalt over the westbound left lane between the Garrity Interchange and the Robinson Overpass Monday night (April 7). This will create a temporary abrupt edge between right and left lanes. ITD will return Tuesday night (April 8) to pave the right lane, eliminating the abrupt edge. In case of rain, paving of the right lane would be delayed until weather permits.
The transportation department reminds motorists to use caution when changing lanes where there is an abrupt edge. I-84 will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. between the Garrity and Meridian interchanges. During the daytime, all lanes of traffic will remain open. Shoulders are restricted and the speed limit is 55 mph in the project area at all times.
Removing ruts on this segment of I-84 will prepare it for construction-related traffic shifts during the widening between Garrity and Meridian. Construction of a third lane in each direction in the existing median will begin this spring, including a permanent barrier to improve traffic safety.
When finished, the new six-lane divided interstate will reduce congestion and improve safety for motorists. The project is expected to be complete in 2010. It is part of a series of improvements planned for I-84 between Caldwell and Meridian.
The project is funded through the GARVEE Transportation Program. The program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite highway improvements.
Central Paving Co. of Boise is the contractor for the $1.1 million milling work.
