Brief nighttime traffic delay expected on eastbound I-84 Saturday (June 28) overnight for Garrity to Meridian widening project
BOISE - Eastbound traffic on I-84 between Caldwell and Meridian will be delayed for approximately 30 minutes sometime between 10 p.m. Saturday night (June 28) and 5 a.m. Sunday morning (June 29), the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
The right lane will be closed and motorists will be delayed between the Franklin Interchange in Caldwell (exit 29) and the Meridian Road Interchange (exit 44). During the delay, flaggers will stop traffic on the eastbound on-ramps between the interchanges and pilot cars will slow traffic to 25 mph.
The traffic delay will allow crews to place a 102-foot long conveyor tube over the eastbound lanes for the I-84, Garrity to Meridian widening and reconstruction project. The conveyor tube will be used to safely transport construction material into the median during the widening project without disrupting traffic.
Between the Garrity and Eagle interchanges, the speed limit is reduced to 55 mph and the inside shoulders are closed. Two lanes of traffic are open during the day and at least one lane of traffic is open in each direction at night (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.)
When complete in 2010, the reconstructed interstate will have six lanes and a median barrier between Nampa and Meridian. The I-84, Garrity to Meridian project is expected to cost approximately $113 million.
The I-84, Garrity to Meridian project is part of a series of interstate improvements planned for I-84 between Caldwell and Meridian through the GARVEE Transportation Program. The program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.
ITD and the Idaho State Police warn motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
