Communities can still submit Safe Routes to School funding applications
BOISE - It's not too late for communities seeking Safe Routes to School funding to submit a funding application for 2009, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

Applications for Idaho projects that lead to more K-8 students walking and bicycling to school will be accepted through Aug. 29, said Josephine O'Connor, ITD's Safe Routes to School coordinator.

Communities that missed the deadline to submit a Letter of Intent are still eligible to send an application, O'Connor said.

Up to $100,000 in Safe Routes to School funds may be used for infrastructure development such as sidewalks or crosswalk improvements. Non-infrastructure programs like organizing "walk to school" events and safety education activities can receive funding up to $25,000.

Once received, the applications are reviewed and scored by a statewide Safe Routes to School advisory committee.

About $1 million is available for distribution in 2009. Since 2007, ITD has awarded $2 million to Idaho communities to improve routes to school.
