New style signals slated for intersection of Idaho 75 and Bullion in Hailey

SHOSONE - Starting Wednesday (Feb. 16) signal changes will begin at the intersection of Bullion Street and Idaho 75 in Hailey, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

The planned changes result from a comprehensive pedestrian safety study prepared by the ITD for the city of Hailey. The changes include:

1. Countdown pedestrian signal heads that show time left for pedestrians to clear a given crosswalk.
2. Installing TURNING TRAFFIC MUST YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS signs to increase driver awareness of pedestrians.
3. Installing protected/permitted left turn signal heads on all four approaches to clear as much left turning traffic as possible prior to the pedestrian WALK interval.

The new signal at Idaho 75 and Bullion Street will be the second in the state utilizing flashing yellow arrows instead of the doghouse arrow style for left turn lanes. The first was installed in Nampa on Caldwell Boulevard last June. Oregon and the City of Seattle are currently using similar signals in several locations.

Preliminary work will begin Wednesday (Feb. 16) from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Traffic may be reduced to one lane for brief periods during this time.

The second stage of this project will start Tuesday (Feb. 22) between 7:30 p.m. and midnight. Motorists should expect possible lane closures while the new signal heads are being installed.

Weather permitting this $23,000 project should be completed by the end of February.

Drivers are reminded to pay close attention to the signal, particularly until they become accustomed to the change.
