Future of recreational airstrips focus of Feb. 18 workshop in Boise

BOISE - A symposium to examine recreational airstrips in Idaho and discuss possible long-term plans for the airstrips will be held Feb. 18 in Boise at the Best Western Vista Inn, 2645 Airport Way.

Recreational use airstrips are gems among Idahos transportation system, and they represent a unique asset that we must plan for, said Robert Martin, Idaho Transportation Department Division of Aeronautics Administrator.

Defining a strategy for the future of Idahos recreational airstrips is the central purpose of the symposium, which is in follow-up to a series of regional workshops held last fall in McCall, Salmon and Worley. The workshops gathered transportation officials, pilots, forest managers, outfitters and other stakeholders to discuss the future of how recreational airstrips are used, managed, maintained and improved. A total of 73 participated; several from each workshop will participate in the statewide session.

Ultimately, an action plan will be drafted to direct the use, management, maintenance and improvement of more than 40 recreational airstrips in Idaho.

Idahos system of recreational airstrips provides access to countless backcountry wilderness areas, supporting Idahos tourism industry and local economies throughout the state. These same airstrips serve as staging areas for search and rescue operations, fire suppression and wildlife and natural resource management activities.
