Robinson Boulevard and Black Cat Road overpass reconstruction to begin late September - ITD awards $8.5 million contract
BOISE - Work will begin in late September on a project to rebuild the I-84 overpasses at Robinson Boulevard and Black Cat Road, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
As part of the I-84 widening project from Nampa to Meridian, both bridges will be demolished later this month, reconstructed, and reopened to traffic in late January 2009.
The current I-84 overpasses at Robinson Boulevard and Black Cat Road are supported by multiple columns spaced too closely, making it impossible to safely add lanes to I-84 with the current bridges in place.
The $8.5 million contract was awarded this week to Graham Construction and Management of Spokane.
"We have a challenging construction schedule ahead of us," said Shawna King, ITD District 3 regional engineer. "The bridges must come down immediately for us to move forward with the widening project, and they must be rebuilt very quickly. We are requiring the contractor to replace the bridges in 120 days, rain or shine."
Beginning in late September, Robinson Boulevard will be closed from Franklin Boulevard to Stamm Lane. Black Cat Road will be closed between Franklin Boulevard and Overland Road.
I-84 will be closed for two nights during the bridge demolition this fall.
"We are asking motorists to plan ahead now and choose another route around the project this fall," said King.
The Robinson Boulevard and Black Cat Road bridge reconstruction projewct on I-84 is funded through the GARVEE Transportation Program. The program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.
ITD and the Idaho State Police warn motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
